Elevated Prairie was commissioned in 2004 by Austin Art
in Public Places for the Central/East Austin Police Station and Forensics
Lab, Austin Texas. This earthwork restores wild
blackland prairie grasses to the front lawn of the Central/East Austin Police
Station and Forensics Lab in a weathering steel labyrinth of planters shaped
like a partial fingerprint.Budget: $130,000.
The prairie grasses grow virtually untended throughout the year, in stark contrast to the regularly tended berm lawn radiating from the planter array, which continues the partial fingerprint shape.

In the center of the planter array is a spun copper self-filling water feature.
